Outdoor Programme Gives Castlebrae Pupils Room To Grow

Young people from the Enhanced Support Base at Castlebrae Community Campus have enjoyed the opportunity to learn and develop in a different environment, supported by a £750 award from the Cameron Toll Community Fund.

The funding has contributed towards an outdoor learning programme for S1 to S3 pupils, helping them build confidence, strengthen social skills and work together outside the classroom.

The Enhanced Support Base (ESB) supports young people with a learning diagnosis, many of whom also have a learning or physical disability. Alongside academic learning, the school provides experiences in which pupils can develop new skills, express themselves and enjoy a sense of achievement.

Lorna Coan. Curriculum Lead of the ESB at Castlebrae Community Campus said: “School can sometimes feel restrictive or challenging for our young people, so it is important that we give them opportunities to learn and grow in different environments. The outdoor sessions provide a safe, welcoming space where pupils can be themselves, work together and develop valuable life skills.

“We previously secured support from the Community Fund for an eight-week outdoor learning programme involving our S4 to S6 pupils. Following its success, younger pupils are now benefiting from the same opportunity.”

Claire Jefcoate, centre manager at Cameron Toll said: “It is wonderful to see the pupils enjoying time outdoors and responding so positively to the experience. These sessions give them the freedom to learn in a different way, while building confidence, friendships and important life skills.”
