Venchie Children & Young People’s Project has received £620 from the Cameron Toll Community Fund to help develop new vegetable and fruit growing spaces within its community garden.

Based in Craigmillar, the community group works to improve the lives of local children and young people by providing opportunities for education, social development, improved health and fun. Through a wide range of activities and experiences, the organisation helps young people build confidence, learn new skills and develop healthy lifestyles.
The funding will be used to purchase planters, soil, a water butt, seeds, fruit trees and watering cans, enabling children and young people to take part in growing their own fruit and vegetables. The project will provide hands-on learning opportunities while encouraging healthy eating, environmental awareness and a greater understanding of where food comes from.
Susan Heron, manager of the Venchie Children & Young People’s Project said: “This funding will help us create exciting new growing spaces where children and young people can learn new skills, spend time outdoors and develop a greater connection with food and nature. We’re incredibly grateful to the Cameron Toll Community Fund for supporting this project and helping us inspire the next generation of growers.”
Claire Jefcote, Centre Manager at Cameron Toll, said: “We’re delighted to support Venchie Children & Young People’s Project and the fantastic opportunities it provides for local children and families. This project will encourage healthy lifestyles, outdoor learning and environmental awareness, while giving young people the chance to enjoy the benefits of growing their own food.”
