Funding Provides A Firm Base For Youngsters

The Base (Midlothian) SCIO has received £750 from the Cameron Toll Community Fund to support its Community Club sessions and weekly youth club for local children and families.

Based in Danderhall, the volunteer-led charity provides free youth clubs, family activities and community events for people living in the village and surrounding communities. Its activities give children safe and inclusive opportunities to build confidence, develop friendships and enjoy new experiences, while providing welcoming spaces where parents and carers can connect with others.

Previously known as Stay & Play, The Base Community Club was renamed to better reflect its welcoming and inclusive approach for children and families of all ages. The club currently runs fortnightly at Danderhall Community Hub, with plans to introduce weekly sessions if longer-term funding can be secured.

The funding will assist with the cost of running the Community Club and providing arts, crafts and creative activity materials, along with free snacks and drinks for those attending. It will also help The Base provide hot food for children attending its separate weekly Wednesday youth club at Danderhall Miners Club, ensuring that family finances are not a barrier to taking part.

Samantha Jenkinson, Founder of The Base, said: “We believe every child should have access to safe and inclusive opportunities, regardless of their family’s financial circumstances. The funding from the Cameron Toll Community Fund will help us keep our activities free and accessible, provide snacks and drinks at our Community Club and hot food at our weekly youth club. It will help us continue creating welcoming spaces where local children and families can connect, have fun and feel part of their community.”

Claire Jefcote, Centre Manager at Cameron Toll, said: “The Base provides valuable activities and support for children and families in Danderhall. We are delighted to help this dedicated team of local volunteers continue offering free sessions where children and young people can make friends, enjoy creative activities and feel safe, supported and included.”
