Funding Boost Helps Kaimes Create Sensory-Rich Play Space

Kaimes School in south-east Edinburgh is dedicated to providing a supportive and inclusive environment for children and young people with autism and additional support needs.

As part of its ongoing commitment to developing engaging outdoor spaces, the school set out to introduce new sensory playground markings. These markings are designed to help pupils regulate their senses, build coordination and improve focus, while further strengthening the school’s nurturing ethos where every pupil feels valued, supported and able to thrive.

The sensory markings are a key element of a wider plan to revitalise the playground, creating a structured, stimulating space where learners can explore, play and develop essential skills.

Holly O’Connor, Pupil Support Officer at Kaimes School said: “Creating a sensory-rich outdoor space is vital for our pupils, and the generous funding from the Cameron Toll Community Fund allows us to take an important step forward. The new markings support sensory integration, emotional regulation and overall wellbeing, while giving pupils a fun and safe area to enjoy every day.”

Claire Jefcoate, Centre Manager at Cameron Toll, added: “Kaimes School is a very special place. When we visited, we saw first-hand the caring approach the staff give to every pupil and the positive response from the children. It was wonderful to see how much the pupils were enjoying the new markings, which are already making a real difference to their daily experience.”
