Big Lessons In Open Spaces

Learning outdoors with fresh air and in open spaces brings huge benefits to young people so when Trees and Seas Outdoor Adventures applied to the Cameron Toll Community Fund we were happy to support their work in south Edinburgh.

When scavenger hunts, bushcraft skills and building dens are combined with natural arts and crafts, nature trails and getting active with swings and hammocks the positive impact on young people’s wellbeing is there to see.

While boosting physical health, enhancing mental wellbeing and developing problem solving skills along with improved creativity, imagination and confidence a young person can create lasting memories and make friends for life.

Jill Purves from Trees and Seas Outdoor Adventures said; “We work with local schools and community groups in south Edinburgh to get young people into the outdoors and to learn valuable skills which have a positive impact on their physical and mental health, which in turn has a positive impact on their education and social skills. The fun they have means they often don’t realise how much benefit they are getting.  The support from the Cameron Toll Community Fund means that we can work with more children in the local community.”

Claire Jefcoate, centre manager at Cameron Toll said: “The last few years have been challenging for many people and young people have often had it harder than most.  The benefits of being outdoors is well known and by combining learning with having fun is such an important thing for their health and wellbeing.”
