British Lung Foundation - Last year the Scottish Executive awarded the British Lung Foundation a grant to run a campaign to raise awareness of the lung disease Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This disease is the UK’s fifth biggest killer, each year causing more deaths than breast, prostate and bowel cancer. Despite this, awareness of COPD is very low in the UK.On Friday 17th September an information and lung testing stand will be in place at the centre offering members of the public the opportunity to undertake a free lung function test. These tests screen for signs of COPD, but do not diagnose. They are done by Health Care Professionals such as Nurses or Physiologists and anybody who has a poor result on the test is referred on to their GP. Also in attendance will be the local smoking cessation team to answer questions and offer advice.
